Recorded at home with Zach Knewstub, October 2, 2019,
Mastered with David Farrell.
The first song I wrote--inspired by Paloma, of course, and Sydney, and also by my brother Kenton. Kenton's visiting my North Beach flat for sessions of his guitar and poems of mine got the wheels and juices flowing toward the combined births of lyrics and melodies over the next few months and 30+ years. Recording with him and other musicians was like entering into a second creative life. In 2014 Hamid Drake intuited the musicality that's vital in Kenton.
lyrics
"A Baby's Smile Is Sweet To See"
A baby's smile is sweet to see
Baby's smile is never evil
Baby kicks like a flower on the sea
She knows not the world's danger or misery
Her touch to you is soft and dear
Her grip as if to a cup so full
Your baby's smile is sweet to see
It throws a glow to your belly
Because she's pure--
Because she's yours--
Because helpless--
Because she stares at you as a focus of trust--
And has also the smile of a witty walrus
You must love this baby tenderly.
Your baby's smile is sweet to see
She is the quickest innocence.
