about

Please visit www.ur1light.com/qr-hand

q.r. hand (1937-2021) organized in the Deep South, traveled in Africa, and celebrated things transcendent as music, national liberation, friendship and love. His energy, rebellion, compassion and lyricism are vital parts of the Rebel Poets' compilations Worlds Made Flesh (1989) and America Fears The Drum. I first met q.r. when thrown together with him and Alfonso Texidor for a reading at the Mission District's Modern Times Bookstore in 1987--thanks to the ever-giving and frequent Trickster Tede Matthews. q. is a poet for new worlds.

Musicians on the tracks from 1989 or 1992 are Babatunde Lea on congas, Henri Flood on timbalees, John Baker on keyboards, David Boyce on tenor saxophone, Kevin Carnes on drums-set, Mark Crawford on drums-set, George Cremaschi on fretless or upright bass, Lewis Jordan on tenor saxophone, and John Karr on electric guitar, William Winant on tympani, and Lee and Salas of Hedzolleh Sounds and Hugh Masakela's band on percussion.

Engineer for both albums is Peter Eckart. He, John Baker and I mixed them. Ken Lee did the mastering. Each of these cassette albums sold out within a year of its release. Thanks to all and to Patrick Andrade for support and inspiration during the 1989-1992 years.

I recorded the two poems and Al Young's splendid Introduction to q's collection, whose really blues, on Sunday and yesterday.
